Impromptu Speaking Genius: Prepare Once, Prepare Forever Using 10 Public Speaking Structures
“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking, with death ranking second.” Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, "This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy."
You might have chuckled at this before. But have you ever wondered why people dread public speaking so much? It's not due to a lack of knowledge on the subject. In fact, many are invited to speak precisely because they're experts in their field.
Let me share an anecdote with you:
Two-Minute Best Man Speech
Once, I was tasked with delivering a best man speech on a mere two minutes' notice. The short notice was because the groom hadn't designated a best man, thinking he had too many close friends to single one out. However, someone had been appointed to deliver a speech. He had travelled from Canada to Abuja for this honour. But on the wedding day, due to some confusion, someone else, without consulting the groom, pegged me for the role!
The groom tried signalling from the dais for the original speaker to proceed, but his signals went unnoticed. I, unaware of his gestures, gave the speech. Judging by the applause and feedback, it seemed to be well-received. The bride's mother, a senator, even expressed her heartfelt gratitude.
How did I conjure up a speech in just 120 seconds? I applied one of the templates from this book.
The main reason people fear public speaking is unpreparedness. But what if you could prep once and be set for life? Believe it or not, this preparation can be achieved in as little as 30 minutes. Since many of us have the content in our heads already, all we need is a strategy for organizing our thoughts. In essence, this means having a structure for our arguments. Nail that, and you're 90% there.
Example:
A simple structure might involve discussing a topic in terms of its past, present, and future.
